Tell Us a Story

Want to help make WPA's year-end appeal a success? We're collecting 6-word stories about criminal justice, second chances and WPA.

The six-word story should provide a moment of conflict, action, and resolution that gives the sense of a complete story transpiring in a moment’s reading: Pen to paper, a writer emerges.

Submit your story today and it might be featured in this year’s appeal!

Did You Know

On October 15, 1848 there were 19 women and 2 children living at Hopper Home? The same East Village building is still used by WPA.

WPA Receives Department of Justice Grant

WPA is pleased to announce that we are one of 118 programs nationwide to receive funding under the Second Chance Act (SCA). The selection process was highly competitive; according to the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs, DOJ received more than 1,000 applications for Second Chance funding this year.

WPA’s mentoring program, WomenCare, will now be offered to women on Riker’s Island. The program will connect women to volunteer mentors in the community.  Mentors will provide support to women as they transition back into the community and pursue their goals.

If you are interested in becoming a WomenCare volunteer, please contact us.

Success Story: Starz Closet

Noting a particular lack of affordable clothing for women size 12 to 22W, WPA started Starz Closet to cater specifically to plus-sized women. Jacqueline attends our Steppin’ Up Intervention group, which addresses issues such as harm reduction, domestic violence, sexual health, anger management, nutrition, and other health-related topics. To prepare for a job interview, Jacqueline was fitted with business appropriate attire. Now she feels prepared and confident.
If you would like to donate to Starz Closet, please contact us.

“Women in prison aren’t who people think they are. When the public becomes aware of the real faces and stories of incarcerated women, they will demand public policy that addresses a broader range of issues more effectively. That’s the only way we’ll ever get decent criminal justice or social justice legislation.”
–Ann Jacobs, former Executive Director of WPA, July 1997
