Clinical Services

Trauma-informed mental health services are a pillar of support for systems-impacted women and LGBTQIA+ individuals.

At the Women’s Prison Association (WPA), we provide a safe and encouraging place where healing can begin. Using tools rooted in research and a deep understanding of our clients’ lived experiences, we encourage our clients to confront their trauma, build self-compassion, and feel empowered, creating pathways to stability and success.

Mental Health Counseling

Our approach is personal, compassionate, and respectful.

Our clinicians develop individualized treatment plans tailored to each client’s experiences and challenges, addressing their short-term needs and long-term goals. We foster an environment that encourages our clients to work on their independence and personal growth. Through our guidance, clients find new perspectives and discover their inner resilience.

Trauma-Informed Care

At WPA, we recognize that our clients' past experiences impact their present-day lives and develop our work around the intersection of trauma and the criminal legal system. We help our clients work through their trauma by building trust, prioritizing their safety, and cultivating collaboration within client-clinician relationships.

Evidence-Based Therapies

Through evidence-based therapies like Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Internal Family Systems, WPA supports clients with the care that best suits their needs. These therapies empower clients to build strength, self-compassion, and resilience.

Family Therapy

We support our clients in building open communication with their families, especially as they navigate the complexities of life after incarceration. Our program helps identify clients' and their loved ones' unique needs and experiences with patience and care.

Substance Misuse Treatment

Our Clinical Services embrace a harm-reduction approach, creating space for clients to explore healing from substance use at their own pace, free from shame. We connect our clients to detox programs within New York City, ensuring all their needs are met.
