Prison-Based Services

The Women’s Prison Association’s (WPA) prison-based services offer women the support they need during and after incarceration.

Through our compassionate and gender-responsive approach, we connect women with the resources and education they need during incarceration that prioritize their health and well-being. Our team meets weekly with women upstate, building trusting relationships and laying the groundwork for continued care after release.

Preventative Health Services and Release Planning

The Women’s Prison Association (WPA) works with women who are currently incarcerated in upstate New York at the Taconic or Bedford Hills correctional facilities.

Connecting to physical and mental healthcare while incarcerated leads to more successful treatment and ongoing wellness upon release. Our programming empowers women to take charge of their health and wellness.

Preventative Health Counseling and Education

We connect women with the resources they need to make informed decisions regarding HIV/AIDS and transmissible diseases. As a contracted PrEP provider for women incarcerated at the Bedford Hills and Taconic correctional facilities, we ensure our clients who are interested in taking PrEP have the opportunity during or after incarceration. We provide counseling and run peer support groups to reduce transmission risk and ensure a caring and consistent support system.

WPA staff meet with women one-on-one for counseling, education, and to develop step-by-step plans for accomplishing individualized health goals.

Release Planning and Continued Care

We build trusting relationships with our clients and prepare them to receive continued support after release. Through wraparound case management, we enroll clients in Community-Based Programs that best serve their needs, such as Clinical Services, Workforce Development, and The Law Project, and connect them to the services they need to transition smoothly back home, including preventive health care and supportive housing.
